Summary
It's 1644 in York, England and the city is under siege. Bridget Hodgson, a twice-widowed gentlewoman midwife, learns that her dear friend Esther Cooper is accused of murdering her husband. Bridget sets out to solve the mystery of who really killed Mr. Cooper before Esther is hanged for her crime. Meanwhile, Bridget must fear for her own safety when her newly acquired maid Martha's dark past catches up with the household.
Critique
This fast-paced mystery has it all--a compelling mystery that keeps you guessing, fascinating historical details of 17th-Century midwifery and law, and a couple of headstrong females sussing out the truth. Here's hoping for at least one sequel. Fans of historical fiction should pick this up for a quick enjoyable read. Highly recommend.
