Summary
A chronicle of the Lambert family, from patriarch Alfred, suffering from Parkinsons and a conservative outlook; Enid, his ever cheerful wife, who wants "one last Christmas" with her family; son Gary, who's all about making money, but fears he's suffering from depression; son Chip, the intellectual who has failed at teaching and is now working for a mysterious Lithuanian propaganda agency; and Denise, a talented chef who can't manage a relationship.
Critique
A view of America through the lens of one family's experiences. Modelled on an old-fashioned Dickens type novel, it's sweeping, funny, literate, and cleverly observant.
