Summary
When the movie "Cleopatra" is being filmed in Rome, it's 1962 and Dee Moray is a 22-year-old actress hired to star alongside of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. Dee is not on set. Instead, she lies ill in a small hotel in the small cliff-side town of Porto Vergogna in Southern Italy. There, Dee awaits a man with whom she's had an affair--an affair that forever changes the lives of Dee; the smitten hotel proprietor Pasquale Tursi; Dee's son, the musician/addict Pat; the film's fledgling publicist-turned movie producer Michael Deane; Deane's employee Claire Silver, an ex-academic with a porn-addict boyfriend; and Shane, a screenwriter who hopes Deane will make his movie.
Critique
This compelling and powerful novel about love, regret, and choices exposes both the beauty and ugliness in life, love, and storytelling. Walter does an exceptional job of creating a fully-realized cast of characters who each play their own important roles in the book's resolution. A fabulous and memorable read.
