Summary
Nora is 'the woman upstairs'. Unmarried and childless, Nora wanted to be an artist, but instead is a schoolteacher and a good girl, a friendly, harmless woman who is really seething inside. When she meets the Shahids, a family visiting for a year, her world is turned upside down as she falls in love with Sirena, a successful artist, Shankar, a visiting professor and their young son Reza, a loving child and student in her classroom.
Critique
A beautifully written novel that is more than it first appears, with multiple literary references and an unreliable narrator. Messud addresses questions about art, women and family life, friendship and betrayal.
