Summary
Reno takes off for New York City, hoping to become an artist, and falls in with the male dominated 70s art scene when she captures the eye of Sandro, 20 years her senior, a well-known minimalist and scion of an Italian motorcycle and tire company. When they travel to Italy, Sandro betrays her and she is swept up in the Italian revolutionary movement.
Critique
This coming of age novel explores wide ranging topics, from women artists to commerce, motorcycles to geography. Reno is na´ve, but extremely smart and ambitious, and her observations are often astonishing. Extremely well-written, with descriptions that linger, but a little unsatisfying, with characters that sometimes seem one-dimensional.
