Summary
14-year-old Esch has just discovered that she is pregnant by Manny, a family friend and thug who barely acknowledges her existence. Esch lives with her drunk, abusive daddy and three brothers, 17-year-old Randall, 16-year-old Skeetah and 7-year-old Junior in Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, a predominantly black coastal town that lies in the direct path of a hurricane the weathermen have named Katrina. In the week preceding the storm's arrival, the poverty-striken family's daily struggles are amplified by Esch's condition, the arrival of Skeetah's pit bull's new puppies, and Randall's quest to secure a spot at basketball camp.
Critique
Moving, heartbreaking and tough to put down, this novel won the National Book Award in 2011. Filled with beautiful language, characters you'll root for, and parallels to ancient mythology, this is an important novel about love and survival.
