Summary
In New York in 1999, Clemmie is an attorney eager to make partner. After attending her Grandmother Addie's ninety-ninth birthday party, Clemmie decides to research her family's history. As Clemmie delves deeper into her grandmother's past, she discovers that Addie was orphaned at age 6 and raised by her uncle, the Earl of Ashford, surrounded by wealth and privilege at the family estate in England. There, too, is where Addie meets and befriends Bea, her beautiful cousin. The two are inseparable and like sisters--until jealousy over a man drives the two apart.
Critique
This family saga drifts between 1999 and Addie's youth and just after WWII, whisking the reader back and forth from high society London, to the heat of Kenya and to the whirl of New York City. Hard to put down and addictive reading.
