Summary
15-year-old Liz and 12-year-old "Bean" (Jean) have been abandoned by their mother many times, but this time they fear foster care. Leaving California by bus the girls head to Byler, Virgina. They arrive at Uncle Tinsley's, their mother's old family home, certain he will take them in until they can be reunited with their mother. Money is tight so they find part-time jobs working for Jerry Maddox, the mill foreman and town bully who takes advantage of the young girls.
Critique
"Bean" narrates this bittersweet story of two courageous young women.
