Summary
Sookie is looking forward to relaxing after her daughter's wedding when she receives a certified letter from Texas. Assuming it's something for her overbearing mother who lives next door, 59 year old Sookie is shocked to learn that she was adopted. She never confronts her mother about the adoption but seeks help from a psychiatrist. Sookie decides to learn more about her birth mother, Fritzi Jurdabralinski, who had been a stunt pilot. During the war she and her sisters successfully ran the family's gas station in Wisconsin. Eventually Fritzi is recruited by the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) and serves until the group is disbanded at the end of the war. Sookie gets to meet Fritzi in California and travels to Wisconsin to meet more of the Jurdabralinski family.
Critique
A nice blend of history and fiction and not all secrets are revealed. Fannie Flagg does not disappoint.
