Summary
Putting herself and her family at great risk, Elizabeth Van Lew was leader of an underground Union spy ring in Richmond during the Civil War. She visited Yankee prisoners bringing baskets of food, medicine, and books and smuggled out messages that eventually made their way to Ulysses S. Grant. After Grant became president, he rewarded Elizabeth for her bravery by making her postmaster of Richmond during his administration.
Critique
Much research went into writing this detailed book which is loosely based on the life of Elizabeth Van Lew. It's interesting to note that she was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame posthumously.
