Summary
Hezekiah Ward is preaching that God is punishing the citizens of York with an extreme heat-wave because prostitution is running rampant in the city. Someone is taking his message to heart. Local officials are hunting for a serial killer. Someone is killing prostitutes and their customers, and the victims are found with Bible verses in their hands. Wealthy midwife and gentlewoman Bridget Hodgson and her assistant Martha Hawkins are called upon to inspect the bodies to determine cause of death. Despite the chief constable's objections, the women help solve the murders dealing with suspects that include Hezekiah Ward and family along with Bridget's nephew.
Critique
The second book in the Midwife Mystery series provides an authentic look at midwifery in the 17th century. The last chapter sets the stage for another book in the series, hopefully in the near future.
