Summary
Former Ohio governor Salmon P. Chase is appointed President Lincoln’s treasury secretary. He has aspirations to become president, and his oldest daughter Kate is also anxious for that to happen. Since the death of Salmon Chase’s three wives, Kate is her father’s confidant and hostess. In Washington D.C. she is considered the “Belle of Washington”, second only to Mrs. Lincoln. Mrs. Lincoln appears to feel threatened by Kate, even refusing to attend the wedding of Kate to senator and former Rhode Island governor William Sprague.
Critique
Lots of Civil War history. Kate’s story often reads more like nonfiction than fiction.
