Summary
In the small town of Carp, NY, it's tradition for high school graduates to play Panic, a secret, dangerous, game that will net the winner thousands of dollars and a chance to get out of Carp, though it may cost them far more than they win. Heather never planned on participating but makes a last minute decision to join, figuring she can use the money to take her younger sister away from her abusive mother. Dodge wants revenge; his sister was paralyzed from a past game of Panic. Who will emerge from the game victorious?
Critique
Suspenseful and heartbreaking, this young adult novel explores the desperation of poverty and the risk taking of teenagers while stressing the value of friendship and inner strength.
