Summary
April Vogt, a furniture expert from Sotheby’s, comes to Paris to help evaluate the contents of an apartment full of antique treasures abandoned 70 years ago by Madame Marthe de Florian's granddaughter, also known at Madame de Florian. Among the contents is a painting by Giovanni Boldini painted around 1888. The painting is of Marthe, who at times was a barmaid, actress, socialite, and lover to several men including BoIdini. Letters written by Marthe de Florian are found which are invaluable in determining the provenance of many of the items.
Critique
The novel is based on the 2010 discovery when an auctioneer entered the apartment of Marthe de Florian frozen in time since 1942. The story behind the disintegration of April's marriage, April's family history, and the lure of Luc Thebault, the estate’s attorney, complete the story.
