Summary
Three young Chinese-American women become fast friends when auditioning to become performers at the Forbidden City nightclub. Each harbors a dark secret. Grace ran away from an abusive home in Ohio. Helen is trapped in her traditional family compound in Chinatown. Ruby is actually of Japanese descent and is eventually found out. She is sent to an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The novel spans 50 years following the careers and personal lives of the three friends.
Critique
This is a story of enduring friendship despite the passage of time and betrayal. An interesting story of Asian entertainers who became part of the "chop suey circuit" that toured the country.
