Summary
Patricia Cowan is a elderly woman suffering from dementia in 2015, spending her final days in an assisted living home. There, as she reminisces, Patricia can see quite clearly the two very different lives that she's led: one in which she accepts a proposal and marries Mark, a domineering Oxford scholar who forces "Tricia" to abandon her dreams; and her other life, in which "Pat" rejects Mark, travels to Italy, finds true love in a lesbian relationship, and is eventually inspired to write best-selling travel guides.
Critique
A magical and memorable read about what-ifs, in a novel in which the 20th-Century setting is a changeable place where historical events may or may not have occurred, and where small everyday decisions by everyday people affect the world on a grand scale.
