Summary
Son of a wealthy family in the 17th-century, James Hookbridge is a rake whose lust for adventure turns him to a life on the seas as a privateer. After being disowned by his family, Hookbridge does wrong by his lover Prosepina, a voudon princess who curses him to an immortal life in the Neverland, where he becomes "Hook" and remains perpetually at the mercy of his arch-enemy, the sadistic child-king Peter Pan. Everything changes for Hook, though, with the arrival of Stella Parrish from World War II-era England, who has somehow found a way to Neverland to escape the horrors of war.
Critique
This magical, compelling novel grabbed me from the start. This story is based on Barrie's classic, but turns it on its head and is only for adult readers. Jensen's Hook is a tragic character trapped in constant battle with Peter Pan, whose quest for perpetual childhood has turned him into a vengeful and violent spoiled brat. A beautifully written book for fans of fairy tales, adventure stories and tales of redemption.
