Summary
After their daughter suffers an accident, the Riveras move from Mexico to the US to aid her recovery. They move into an apartment complex that houses many immigrant families and try to adapt to their new lives, including their daughter's relationship with a young man in the building. Alternate chapters include voices from the other apartment dwellers who narrate their experiences as new Americans.
Critique
A dramatic tale of immigrant life, stressing the difficulties faced as well as the perseverance and the optimism needed to succeed. Henriquez captures well the individual experiences, the failures as well as the victories of families looking for a new life in America.
