Summary
Ove is a set-in-his-ways, cranky 59-year-old man whose wife, the love of his life, Sonja, has recently died. To make matters worse, Ove has just been forced into early retirement. Without a friend in the world or a routine to stick to, Ove decides to kill himself, but he's interrupted by the arrival of new neighbors, the pregnant Parveneh and her husband and two children. Parveneh manages to see-through Ove's rough exterior and manipulates him into helping her do the types of jobs that Ove is convinced no one else can do--and ultimately forming a lasting friendship that enables Ove to find living worthwhile.
Critique
This funny, sad, touching debut is a lightning-fast read, that will have you laughing out loud one moment and weeping the next. A charming, feel-good read.
