Summary
In future New York, cell phones have morphed into Memes, devices that have replaced memory and vocabulary. Anana Johnson's father Doug, however, is a throwback; he doesn't believe in the usefulness of Memes and is getting ready to launch the final edition of the North American Dictionary of the English Language, when he suddenly disappears. In her search for him, Anana confronts Synchronic, the company that creates the Memes, and must join with the resistance movement to find her father and stop the spread of 'word flu', a virus Synchronic is spreading that destroys language and silences dissent, often violently.
Critique
Graedon creates a creepy, chilling future world while exploring the extremes of technology and the disappearance of language.
