Summary
During the Civil War, Will Spooner joins the Kansas Volunteers fighting for the Union. His wife, Eliza, and two teenage children are left behind to run the farm. At Christmas, Eliza quilts a patriotic quilt for Will. When Eliza receives word that Will is dead, she invites another widow, Missouri Ann Stark, and her little girl to move in with her. The women become close friends and work together to help each other survive and eventually thrive.
Critique
A heartwarming story of strong self-reliant women left behind at home during the Civil War. Some of the women would become grandmothers of characters from the author's "Persian Pickle Club" novel.
