Summary
Married to a stranger at age 15, Josephine Rinaldi doesn't see her new husband again until he retrieves her from her small Italian village to immigrate to America with him when she is 24. Once there, however, Josephine is forced to bear one child after the other for Vincenzo, whom she finds repulsive and unsatisfying. The vignettes that follow her story trace her family's trajectory through 20th-century America, where Rinaldi female descendents all seem to be similarly filled with passionate and unquenchable longings.
Critique
This novel is really a series of vignettes about individual members of an Italian American family. An interesting premise with interesting characters and an undercurrent of sexuality throughout its pages.
