Summary
When Charlotte Baird, a 20-year-old heiress whose interest in photography makes her atypical among her peers, meets Bay Middleton, she is instantly drawn to him, despite his lack of wealth or title. Even the rumors, that Middleton is a fortune hunter who is as skilled with women as he his horses, do not sway Charlotte's affections. Just as Middleton and Charlotte are set to become engaged, Middleton draws yet another woman's eye. Charlotte has some fierce competition; for it is Elizabeth, the Empress of Austria, an avid horsewoman, who hires Bay as her riding guide and develops her own attraction for the man.
Critique
This entertaining historical romance is based on the real life relationships between the Empress of Austria, English soldier and rider Bay Middleton, and heiress Charlotte Baird. A truly entertaining read that is chock-full of Victorian era period details.
