Summary
This is the story of Julia Dent Grant and her slave Jule. Due to Julia’s poor eyesight, Jule often served as Julia’s eyes. Jule could read and write and also had a gift for making lotions. After four years of courtship, Julia marries Ulysses S. Grant. During the Civil War, she would follow Grant with their four children and Jule. After Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, Jule runs away. She eventually settles in Washington D.C. There she is able to follow the lives of the Grants from a distance.
