Summary
The year is 1848. The tiny frontier town is St. Joe, Missouri. Samantha's greatest desire is to return to New York and pursue her music career, but when tragedy strikes she has no choice but to flee into the wild west. Her only companion is her new friend Annamae. The Oregon Trail is no place for two girls, but it's even more dangerous for a Chinese girl and a runaway slave so they disguise themselves as boys and attempt to outrun their troubles.
Critique
Lee's stunning debut is a welcome addition to the historical fiction genre. This survival story is full of adventure and wild west action, but at its core is a moving story of trust and friendship. Plus, there are cowboys and horses and a little romance!
