Summary
Jacob is on the cusp of adulthood, and he's not sure where destiny will lead him. As the son of a North Carolina meth dealer and his addict ex-wife, he's been groomed to join the family business and feels he can't escape, though he yearns to. The one light in his life is his girlfriend, Maggie, who's going to get out of their little backwoods town and go to college.
Critique
This is a gritty and brutal novel with an incredible sense of place: Joy's North Carolina is claustrophobic and harrowing, with barking dogs, weapons galore and police that aren't exactly law abiding. Jacob's vulnerability is laid bare and you can't help rooting for him.
