Summary
Maeve Conlon, a middle-aged mom who runs a bakery in New York, has just buried her father. She is tougher than she looks, but when she learns that she had an older sister with developmental issues who was placed in a home, her life tailspins. Soon afterward, Maeve is attacked in her bakery and finds a severed finger in her freezer. The police investigate these crimes, as Maeve looks into the whereabouts of Evelyn--learning that the child was sent to Mansfield, an institution which later closed due to poor conditions. Maeve joins a support group for relatives of the “Mansfield missing,” and when a woman from the group is killed, Maeve realizes her search just might put her own life in peril. The fearless Maeve takes justice into her own hands.
Critique
This multilayered mystery is action packed, with multiple story-lines and a complex protagonist who is not afraid to protect the ones she loves.
