Summary
Ten years ago, Melisandre Harris Dawes was found not guilty for the death of her two-month-old daughter, whom she had left locked in a car. After the trial, she left the country in order to start over and get out of the public spotlight. Now back in Baltimore to star in a self-funded documentary, she wants to get to know her two estranged teenage daughters, but her ex, Stephen Dawes, doesn't approve. A new mother herself, PI Tess Monaghan wants nothing to do with a child-killer, but just can't refuse the extra money when she's asked to help with Melisandre's security. When the ex is found dead, Melisandre is the prime suspect. Is everyone right to be weary of this woman, or is she being unfairly tried in the court of public opinion all over again? Tess is on the case.
Critique
Unexpected twists and turns in this 12th Tess Monaghan novel will keep you reading. The mother-daughter relationship between Tess and her three-year-old daughter, Carla Scout, is endearing and realistic. Tess is a realistic and compelling character that readers keep faithfully returning turning to.
