Summary
It's 1937 and F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary success is a distant memory and he is broke. Estranged but still emotionally tied to his wife Zelda, who is relegated to a mental asylum, Fitzgerald attempts to make a new start as a screenwriter in Hollywood. There, in his final years, Fitzgerald begins an affair with gossip columnist Sheilah Graham and struggles with his lifelong demons, alcoholism and regret.
Critique
This well-researched, sympathetic and sometimes maudlin fictionalized depiction of Fitzgerald's last days is a compelling read that is a must for fans of the Fitzgeralds. O'Nan does a brilliant job of bringing the Hollywood of the 1930s to life and readers see Bogey, Dorothy Parker, Myna Loy and other Hollywood greats at the peak of their fame.
