Summary
Raised in exile, plain and bookish Kelsea is nothing like the mother she never knew, the vain Queen Elyssa. On her nineteenth birthday, Kelsea is escorted to the castle to ascend her rightful throne. Though inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea wears the magical Tearling sapphire, and is accompanied by the Queen's Guard, the remainder of a group of loyal brave knights sworn to protect her. But with her kingdom in turmoil and at the mercy of the powerful neighboring nation of Mortmesne, Kelsea will need all the help she can get to survive those who wish her harm--especially the evil immortal Red Queen of Mortmesne.
Critique
This medieval fantasy universe has an unusual premise, being set after the destruction of modern day civilization. Slow to start, the action picks up in the second half of the book as Kelsea matures and takes on injustices. Readers will be eager to get their hands on its sequel, The Invasion of the Tearling.
