Summary
Morbidly obese, Plum Kettle hates being noticed and judged. In her job answering fan mail for a teen girls' magazine, she can remain anonymous while she saves up for her weight-loss surgery. One day, a mysterious woman introduces Plum to Calliope House, a community of women who live life on their own terms and take her in. There, Plum learns how much it will cost her emotionally to be considered “beautiful." Meanwhile, a dangerous guerrilla group begins to terrorize individuals and industries that take advantage of women. As her self confidence grows, Plum unwittingly becomes involved in the group’s sinister and potentially deadly plan.
Critique
Part coming-of-age story, part revenge fantasy, this is an unusual, sometimes funny and sometimes shocking novel that takes on the beauty industry, gender inequality, and society’s weight loss obsession.
