Summary
Lee Westfall is a hard-working, honest young woman with a huge secret. She can divine gold. To protect their daughter and her secret the Westfalls live a modest life. There is one person who knows her secret and he is willing to kill to control her. When her home is no longer safe, she flees West to California with a group of Gold Rushers. If she survives the journey, California and its hidden reserves of gold could be the perfect place for Lee to rebuild her life.
Critique
Disguised as a boy, Lee struggles to survive on the Oregon Trail. This is a solid opening to a planned trilogy that blends American history and elements of magic. Hardship, friendship, loss and betrayal are all par for the course in the wild, wild West.
