Summary
Ruth was the thirty-ninth of her fatherís forty-two children living in a fundamentalist Mormon colony in rural northern Mexico. Her biological father was murdered when Ruth was just a baby. Her mother, Kathy, remarries, becoming the second wife of Lane. Lane began sexually abusing Ruth when she was in grade school. After her mother and brother are killed in a freak accident, Ruth finds out that Lane is also abusing her disabled brother. Ruth escapes to California with her siblings with the help of an older brother. There she raised her 3 youngest sisters, got her GED, went to college and then to graduate school.
