Summary
In Florida, Homer Hickam Jr.ís mother, Elsie Lavender, had an affair with dancer film star Buddy Ebsen. When Buddy left for New York, Elsie moved back to Virginia where she married coal miner Homer Hickam. Buddy sent the couple an alligator, Albert, as a wedding present. Eventually Homer gave Elsie an ultimatum to get rid of Albert or he would leave. They decide to take Albert back to Florida. Their crazy adventures along the way form the basis for the novel.
