Summary
Veronica Speedwell, a foundling who was raised by her two late aunts, is not your typical Victorian Era lady. A lepidopterist, Veronica has financed her own expeditions to exotic locations and conducted torrid affairs with exotic men along the way. She is in England when her last living aunt dies and is approached by Baron von Stauffenbach, who claims knowledge of her mother's past. Von Stauffenbach puts her in the care of the brooding Mr. Stoker, but when the Baron is found dead, the police suspect Stoker. Stoker and Veronica, both natural historians with scientific curiosity and a growing affection for one another, partner up to find the real killer.
Critique
Mix a feisty heroine, an intricate plot, witty repartee, a suspenseful mystery and a dose of romance, and you've got this first in a new series by the always-dependable Deanna Raybourn.
