Summary
Inspired by stories told by his grandfather on his death bed, Chabon combines memoir with fiction as he narrates his grandfather's story, growing up poor in Philadelphia, discovering the Nazi's secret armaments facility during World War II and lifelong obsession with space travel and engineering. Hovering over all is his grandfather's love for a French Holocaust survivor who cannot escape the horrors of her past.
Critique
Chabon vividly weaves past and present, writing perceptively of his characters' lives, of small interactions and life-altering historical events. Chabon's writing is not to be missed.
