Summary
Narrated partially by a group of church women, this is the story of three young people in a black community in Southern California and the impact of secrets on their lives. High school senior Nadia Turner is mourning her motherís suicide when she starts dating the local pastorís son, former football hopeful Luke Sheppard who's recovering from a career ending football injury. Nadia doesn't reveal her pregnancy and when they break up, Nadia befriends Aubrey, who's harboring wounds of her own.
Critique
Bennett's debut coming-of-age novel is an observant, compassionate and poignant look at the lives and decisions of young adults.
