Summary
Yeong-hye has been an ordinary and submissive wife and when she suddenly becomes a vegetarian, her family acts as if she's become mad and that they've been betrayed. They try to control her through reminding her of social mores; they even force feed her and become violent. She reacts by withdrawing further from society and rebelling from rules, appearing nude in public and refusing all food except water. Her voice, however, is rarely heard, as the book is narrated by her husband, brother-in-law and sister.
Critique
Spare and weirdly fascinating, this novel of a stifling society and a dysfunctional family is transfixing.
