Summary
Rose Zimmer and her brother were part of the Kindertransport. (Before the start of WWII, nearly 10,000 Jewish children were sent to Great Britain without their parents to escape the Nazis.) Rose's parents stayed behind in Vienna and sadly died in a concentration camp. The family's treasures, including a painting by Chaim Soutine, were looted by the Nazis. Decades later the same painting is in Los Angeles at the Goldstein home where it is stolen again. Lizzie Goldstein feels responsible since the painting disappeared during one of her parties at home and she is obsessed with finding out what happened to it. Rose and Lizzie find each other and become fast friends with their shared history.
Critique
A complicated but enjoyable historical novel.
