Summary
Lady Athelinda Playford decides to rewrite her will and entirely omit her two children in favor of her secretary, despite the fact that the man is rumored to be terminally ill. With family, guests, and servants all present, she then proceeds to announce this over dinner at her Irish mansion. As it happens, her secretary is found dead later that very evening after the dinner. Under the circumstances, why would this wealthy author of children's books have designated him as the recipient of her estate? How, in fact, did he die, and who was ultimately responsible? Chill out while Poirot sorts out the entire matter.
Critique
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Sophie Hannah makes a decent attempt to demonstrate why Agatha Christie is the most widely-read author of all time. Adopting Christie's plotting, her sense of timing, her treatment of the usual suspects, her penchant for red herrings, and most especially her inclusion of the notable character Hercule Poirot, Hannah engages the reader with familiarity and entertains with finesse. Recommend.
