Summary
The Home for Wayward and Misbegotten Creatures is an orphanage run like a prison by the evil Miss Carbunkle. All its inhabitants are 'groundlings'--half human, half animal creatures. "Number 13" is a one-eared fox-like creature. At first nameless and friendless, everything changes when Number 13 meets Trinket, a half-bird groundling. She christens him "Arthur," and the two set out to escape the home and find their destiny--but first find danger and adventure at every turn.
Critique
This beautifully illustrated children's book is a charming read that takes readers on a journey through a Dickensian, steampunk world. It is the beginning of a series and soon to be made into a film.
