Summary
In a near future, where evolution has started to reverse and women begin to give birth to less evolved human infants, 26-year-old Cedar Hawk Songmaker is four months pregnant. As the government enforces martial law and begins rounding up of pregnant women for study, Cedar goes into hiding by traveling to the Ojibwe reservation where her own birth mother, Mary Potts, lives. Even as Cedar narrates her story to her future child, she wonders how she can keep her baby and herself safe.
