Summary
In 1969, the four Gold siblings, Simon, Klara, Daniel and Varya visit a fortune teller when Daniel, the oldest, is just 13. They are separately seen by the woman who tells each of them the date of their deaths. The information they are given haunts and shapes each of their lives in the decades that follow, in this novel that explores the ideas of fate and free will.
Critique
As readers must follow the Gold siblings to their (in some cases tragic and untimely) deaths, this is emotional reading. The magic in this unforgettable novel is its fine character development and its lessons about enjoying the life one is given.
