Summary
In 1785, merchant John Hancock worries that one of his ships has been lost at sea until its captain returns with the news that that he has sold Hancock's ship to purchase a 'mermaid', a grotesque carcass with the tail of a fish and the body of a monkey. Hancock is appalled until he realizes he can display the curiosity for coin. As a result, he's thrown into the path of he most famous courtesan in London, Angelica Neal, and between them, an unconventional romance blooms--but will the curse of the mermaid ever allow them to be happy?
Critique
Though this atmospheric historical fiction mixes in magical realism, it also effectively evokes the 18th-century. A slow-burning satisfying read that despite its uneven ending will mesmerize its readers.
