Summary
Toby Hennessy has led a charmed life but after a night out with friends, he is beaten senseless and afterwards, physically and mentally, he has changed. Toby goes to stay at the “Ivy House” with his Uncle Hugo, who is in the last stages of brain cancer, but when a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden, it turns out to have belonged to a high school friend who was thought to have committed suicide years previously. Answering police questions is impossible for Toby, who can’t seem to remember if he had anything to do with a murder over a decade ago.

Critique
A slow, suspenseful read. Not a part of French's Dublin Murder Squad series.
