Summary
New York heiress Mary Eliza Philipse is in awe of George Washington before they meet. Quickly they fall in love. Washington proposes and Mary Eliza accepts. Sadly Washington cannot get leave and is slandered in the press. For 19 months, they are apart. Both write letters to each other but neither receives anything in return. Twenty years later they learn what kept them apart.
Critique
Extensive research by the author into historical accounts, letters and personal journals make for an interesting look at pre-Revolutionary War society.
