Summary
After three miscarriages, Fleetwood Shuttleworth, the 17-year-old mistress of Gawthorpe Hall, is desperate to provide her husband with an heir. On the road, she meets Alice Grey, a young local woman who has knowledge of herbs and skills which may help Fleetwood during her latest pregnancy, and convinces Alice to be her midwife. Alice, however, has been cavorting with women who have been accused of using familiars as instruments of evil. With supporters of King James I on the hunt for anything resembling witchcraft, Fleetwood risks angering her husband and endangering her own future by associating with Alice.
Critique
Based on the real-life events of the Pendle Hill Witch Trials, this first novel is dark and suspenseful as it portrays the plight of women during the 17th century. Pitch-perfect pacing captures the atmosphere of hysteria leading up to the witch trials.
