Summary
The author inherited a trunkful of letters addressed to Mr. B. Virdot (his grandfather Sam Stone). Sam was actually Sam Finkelstein, a Romanian Jew who made up his new life story upon arrival in the United States. In 1933, Sam anonymously offered $10.00 to 75 needy families at Christmastime in Canton, Ohio if they wrote him letters describing their hardships. The response was so overwhelming he sent $5.00 to 150 families (which is equal to about $100.00 today).
Critique
Beautiful but heart wrenching stories of suffering, loss, endurance, humility and gratitude.
