Summary
In 1940s Nazi-occupied France, American Varian Fry works to enable artists and intellectuals emigrate to America. Additional complications arise when a long-lost lover seeks his aid to help a German physicist escape to America.
Critique
Based on the letters and manuscripts of Fry himself, Orringer has written an engaging and insightful saga of his heroic efforts to enable Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Hannah Arendt and others escape Nazi-occupied France and poignantly explores Fry's emotional conflict when his lover, Elliot Grant, returns unexpectedly after a 12-year absence.
